Our tips for a stable Wi-Fi connection

While using your mobile phone, tablet, or computer, try to be as close as possible to your b-box/Internet Box or Wi-Fi Booster. This is because the Wi-Fi signal weakens as you move further away from it.

The strength of your Wi-Fi is influenced by any barriers that exist between your device and the b-box/Internet Box or Wi-Fi Booster since the Wi-Fi signal travels in a direct path. Any obstructions that separate your device from the b-box/Internet Box or Wi-Fi Booster, including elements like concrete, metal, brick, or insulated walls, can diminish the signal. Additionally, furniture such as mirrors, shelves, wardrobes, etc., can also attenuate the Wi-Fi signal.

Where should you put the b-box/Internet Box?

  • The optimal placement for the b-box/Internet Box is in the center of your house, in an open space (avoid placing it inside a cupboard) and at a height of more than one meter from the ground. This will ensure better Wi-Fi coverage.
  • Ensure that the b-box/Internet Box or Wi-Fi Booster is positioned at least one meter away from other electrical appliances to prevent interference.
  • If your b-box/Internet Box is located in the basement or garage, the Wi-Fi signal will be significantly weakened. It is advisable to install the b-box/Internet Box on the ground floor using an RJ11 cable (for DSL connection) or an Ethernet cable (for fiber connection). The cable should be long enough to reach from the socket (or fiber modem) in the basement.
  • If relocating the b-box/Internet Box proves to be challenging, you have the option to seek assistance from our technicians or purchase a Wi-Fi Booster to expand the coverage throughout your house.

How to position the b-box/Internet Box?
Ensure that the LEDs on the b-box/Internet Box are facing outwards. They should not be directed towards the wall or the floor. In the case of installation in the basement, position the LEDs facing upwards to facilitate the Wi-Fi signal reaching the floor above.

While Wi-Fi is convenient, there are also advantages to using an Ethernet cable to connect your computer, TV Box, or console to the b-box/Internet Box:

  • You'll experience a faster Internet connection.
  • There will be no interference issues from other devices.
  • You won't risk overloading the Wi-Fi network.
  • You can reach areas that are too far for reliable Wi-Fi coverage, as long as there is an Ethernet socket available.

Ethernet cables can be purchased at any electronics store. However, if you want to have Ethernet sockets installed throughout your home, it is best to contact an electrician or have it done during renovation work. Please note that this service is not provided by Scarlet.

Check that your Ethernet cables aren't too old. It is best to use RJ45 Ethernet cables which are at least category 6a. Use them to connect as many devices as possible, especially the ones which use the most bandwidth, such as the TV Box, console and Wi-Fi Booster.

There are several electrical appliances that can interfere with your Wi-Fi signal, including microwave ovens, alarm systems, security cameras, radiators, doorbells, lighting fixtures, baby monitors, and more. It is important to be aware of these potential disruptions when setting up your Wi-Fi network.
To minimize interference, it is advisable to keep a distance from such electrical appliances and position yourself as close as possible to the b-box/Internet Box or Wi-Fi Booster.

It is advisable to refrain from connecting your Wi-Fi to any computer, tablet, or mobile phone that is older than five years. Doing so may potentially slow down other connected devices, including the newest ones!
Whenever possible, it is recommended to use a cat 6a Ethernet cable for connecting these devices. Additionally, make sure to switch them off or disable their Wi-Fi when they are not in use.

The quality of your Wi-Fi signal is also influenced by your usage habits. Engaging in activities such as downloading large files, like torrents, or simultaneously using multiple devices will have an impact on the Wi-Fi quality.

If you're experiencing a significantly slow Internet connection, try using another device to compare its speed with our speedtest on the web. If the other device shows a better connection, it is likely that your current device has some issues or its Wi-Fi functionality is not performing optimally. In such cases, consider restarting your device or utilizing another device to browse the web using Wi-Fi.

If you live in a house or a spacious apartment, the Wi-Fi signal emitted by the b-box/Internet Box might not have enough strength to reach every room. In such instances, you can utilize a Wi-Fi Booster to expand and enhance your network coverage.

If you are experiencing a consistently slow or frequently dropping connection:

  1. Turn off the b-box/Internet Box by pressing the start/stop button located on the back.
  2. Wait for approximately ten seconds.
  3. Turn the b-box/Internet Box back on.

If you are facing connectivity problems, refer to our advice on Internet issues.

If you are experiencing recurring problems, either with establishing a connection or with a persistently slow connection, please contact our technical service for further assistance.
